Discover: Orientation in the world of data science and primer in machine learning

Data science is changing what organizations do …What will be the impact on your organization? And on your career? What opportunities does it create, and how to seize them?

Discover is the first level in the Data Science for Professionals program, based on the dual perspectives of the universities of Eindhoven and Tilburg. Discover prepares you for Level 2: Execute (7 months, Certified Data Scientist) and Level 3: Lead (1 year, Certified Lead Data Scientist). It is also possible to do Level 1: Discover as a stand alone module.

discover

What you will do

  • Introduction Creating value from data: towards a data-driven organization, data science in practice, and entrepreneurial data science
  • Data-science projects Executing a data-science project following the CRISP-DM process model
  • Essential machine learning Coding an end-to-end machine-learning pipeline that trains several classifiers and chooses the one with the highest classification performance.
  • Practical machine learning in Python.

Detailed Discover curriculum

You walk away with

  1. Understanding: recognize different views on data science, and on where and when data science can offer added value (and when not). Able to execute a simple data-science project using the CRISP-DM process.
  2. Essential skills: able to fit a machine-learning model in standard situations, and a solid comprehension of what machine learning is and what it can do. Hands-on experience applying machine learning in a standard case.
  3. Orientation: the insights of Discover are designed to help you orientate in the data-science world, and establish your learning goals and career ambitions for your further development as a data-science professional (Levels 2 and 3).

Do you fit the profile?

You have a HBO or WO degree and affinity with analytics and IT, and the ambition to learn basic programming skills. You have the ambition to grow in a more senior professional position, combining technical expertise with boundary-crossing skills in leadership, entrepreneurship, complex problem solving and critical thinking.

Data scientists are T-shaped professionals

The T shape visualizes the idea that a successful career is based on the combination of deep technical expertise (the vertical bar) and wide and broad boundary-crossing skills (the horizontal bar). JADS’s Professional Program trains T-shaped data scientists, who master the technical skills of data engineering and data analytics, and who are also business savvy, understand how business models and strategies work, are able to manage data-science projects delivering results, and in general, know what it takes to get things done in large and complex organizations.

JADS Marienburg campus

Things you will like

  • Challenge-based learning: teaching does not start from theory and technology, but from a real challenge, either for a business or society or personal. Taking a real challenge as a point of departure makes learning motivating, helps in getting your company or organization involved, and is a catalyst to achieving real impact.
  • The Mariënburg, a former convent in the historical center of Den Bosch, is JADS’s home. It’s a welcoming, inspirational and atmospheric environment for life-long learning, with the former chapel functioning as the main auditorium, and the vast complex offering many surprising authentic details reminiscent of its former function.

Move on to Level 2: Execute

Level 2: Execute continues after Level 1: Discover, offering a core program in data analytics, data engineering and data entrepreneurship. Execute also offers community-specific modules, teaching the impact and applications of data science in a specific work domain. Students in Execute work on an elaborate and complex group project, and are trained and certified as all-round, professional data scientists.

More about Execute

Level 3: Lead continues after Level 2: Execute, offering further specialization in selected topics, and individual development of one’s leadership skills.

Participants of Lead are coached into taking a leading role in the development of their organizations’ data ambitions.

Teaching in Covid times …

We’ve created a welcoming and warm online teaching environment, which we use as long as the covid situation prevents classroom teaching. Instructors and teaching technologies are adjusted to online teaching. We miss the friendly and inspirational atmosphere of our historic campus, but the teaching effectiveness of online course matches that of classroom teaching!
