What is data science? What can you do with it? Why does it have so much impact in business, industry, healthcare and the public sector? And how can you change your team into a state-of-the-art data driven department and become an Analytics Translator?

This 5-day course is targeted at professionals and managers eager to learn how to integrate data and analytics into their work. The in depth data knowledge of Technical University of Eindhoven is combined with the business expertise of Tilburg University, combined in JADS.

Where data engineers and data scientists are technical experts, Analytics Translators are the bridge with marketing, supply chain, manufacturing, strategy and management. The role of Analytics Translator is crucial to ensure that data science connects flawlessly to the business needs. And they know how to effectively lead a data-science project that gets things done.This unique course prepares you for a leading role in this new business reality.

What you will do

  • Introduction: Data science: new forms of data, new analytics and new opportunities. We discuss Big Data, predictive algorithms, machine learning and AI. We discuss typical applications, ranging from data science to make current processes and services more efficient, to new products with smart features, and data and analytics as a basis for new business models.
  • How does data science work? We discuss data-analytic thinking and the CRISP-DM model for data-science projects. We develop a fundamental grasp of the main steps of a data-science project: translating a business goal to a data-science question, finding and accessing data sources, extracting features from data, training and selecting a machine-learning algorithm, evaluating the performance and deploying the algorithm in a machine-learning pipeline.
  • We demonstrate practical implementations of machine learning and data engineering in a Python-based analytics environment. It is not required that you can program in Python, and learning to code in Python is not part of this course.

You walk away with

  1. Solid and hands-on understanding of machine learning and data engineering. You will understand the various types of algorithms, how they are trained, and how they are implemented in a modern data infrastructure.
  2. Practical data entrepreneurship. You will know the value that Big Data and analytics could bring to the organization, and master the skills to translate business goals to data-science questions. You will have a sound understanding of typical applications of data science in your field.
  3. CRISP-DM project management. You will master the skill to define a good data-science project and translate the work into a logical structure of tasks. You will understand the different roles of data engineers, data analysts, domain experts, and what you should expect from them.
  4. Orientation: this 5-day program is a primer to the ensuing Certificied Analytics Translator program (6 months) or the Certified Lead Analytics Translator program (1 year). The insights of this Summerschool program are designed to help you orientate in the data-science world, and establish your learning goals and career ambitions for your further development in data and analytics.

You have a HBO or WO degree and at least 5 years of work experience. This course is designed for business professionals who want to become the crucial link between business and data science and analytics teams. JADS’s Professional Program trains T-shaped data scientists, who master the technical skills of data engineering and data analytics, and who are also business savvy, understand how business models and strategies work, are able to manage data-science projects delivering results, and in general, know what it takes to get things done in large and complex organizations.

Our professor

Joran Lokkerbol

Joran Lokkerbol is a data scientist and director of Centre of Economic Evaluation & Machine learning at Trimbos. Furthermore has he specialised in machine learning at Harvard and MIT, and is active as a post-doc at the UMCG. Issues that interest him are optimization of the healthcare system, consultancy and the development of models. In recent years his main focus has been evaluating cost effectiveness of interventions in mental healthcare.

The Summerschool Data Science for Analytics Translators offers access to the Level 2: Execute program (5 additional months), offering a core program in data analytics, data engineering and data entrepreneurship. The program also offers sector specializations, teaching the impact and applications of data science in healthcare, industry, the public sector and professional services. The program is very hands-on, and students work on an elaborate and complex group project.

Want to learn even more? … with 5 additional months, the Level 3: Lead program offers further specialization in selected topics, and individual development of one’s leadership skills. Participants are coached into taking a leading role in the development of their organizations’ data ambitions and strategy.

We’ve created a welcoming and warm online teaching environment, which we use as long as the covid situation prevents classroom teaching. Instructors and teaching technologies are adjusted to online teaching. We miss the friendly and inspirational atmosphere of our historic campus, but the teaching effectiveness of online course matches that of classroom teaching!
