Expert Talks: Data Science & The Social Good

In this edition of Expert Talks, we will go into what data science could mean for The Social Good, in the light of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals established by the UN. At JADS, we call this Social & Digital Entrepreneurship and it’s one of the key application domains at JADS.

Two speakers will go into their respective cases and projects. We will close, as always, with a panel discussion.

Zero Hunger Lab: from bytes to bites

dr. Marleen Balvert, assistant professor Operations Research & Machine Learning, Zero Hunger Lab, Tilburg University.

Every day over 600 million people go to bed hungry, a number that has grown strongly over the past year. At Zero Hunger Lab we use data and analytics to contribute to realizing global food security. In this talk we’ll dive into one of Zero Hunger Lab’s projects: optimizing diets that are healthy, affordable and sustainable.

Smart Start: creating opportunities by combining data and knowledge

dr. Patricia Prüfer, Head Data Science CentERdata.

For problems like poverty and domestic violence, we often see intergenerational transmission patterns. Within the Smart Start program, we combine predictive analytics with design thinking to develop preventive interventions for the well-being and protection of vulnerable children.
