Invitation to Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics Current forecasts tell us that in the future we will all be ‘urban’. This rapid urbanization of our planet calls for smart and evidence-based responses, from both the policy side and the research community.
M-i-City Centre The M-i-City Centre at JADS aims to introduce a novel perspective on the complexity of cities (and urban areas) by developing new data-based envisioning methods for ‘cities4people’. This will be done by using (i) systematic decomposition tools for the urban space (the ‘microcosmic city’) and (ii) (big) data on small-scale units in the city as knowledge-based building blocks for the real essence of the modern city. Much emphasis will be put on the statistical organization of micro information in the digital arena of contemporaneous cities as a tool for sustainable urban governance. Kick-off meeting The international kick-off meeting of this new initiative, titled: Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics, will take place on 20 April 2018. The venue of the meeting will be the newly renovated Chapel at the JADS Mariënburg Campus. The preliminary program can be found via the link below. Join the international experts, governmental officials and peers for this kick-off (registration is free)! > Click here for more information and registration March 3rd, 2018

JADS CLLQM: Professor Donald Green on interference and bias ‘The pace at which data science is moving forward is breathtaking. As a leading knowledge institute in this field, we at JADS consider it our task to take on an active role in the debate of the impact of data science on society as we know it. As researchers, we should not only focus on ‘hard core’ data science, but broaden our scope: to optimizing the application of big data for improving and solving business and societal models, processes and challenges,’ Arjan Haring, Scientific Advisor at JADS, explains about what he considers one of the roles of the data science academy to be.
‘To me, the data economy should fuel more evidence-based practices, not simply algorithms. When data is used in a way it tries to unravel causal relations, it adds to how fast we or an organization can learn. But it also requires us to accept that it’s not only successes that lead the way. We have to adapt our mindset. To: where the more we know, the less we know. Where we don’t succeed (or increase revenue streams) every time we do something, where we fail most of the time. By accepting this harsh reality of innovation, we will learn and be able to take the innovative lead. JADS is increasingly focusing on combining experimentation with data science. In this way, we enable more effective testing and robust data analysis. In our opinion the best of both worlds. And it’s why we are pleased to have Professor Green as guest speaker in our third JADS CLLQM session.’ > Read more about this special CLLQM with Professor Donald Green January 17th, 2018
Celebrating data entrepreneurship: graduation of the first Data Expert Program students You might have seen the happy faces when you are following us on social media. On December 15th, we celebrated the graduation of the first Data Expert Program students. A festive event during which the students proved to be real data pioneers, capable of combining data science and entrepreneurship.
Before the students could call themselves Data Expert Program graduates, they had to pitch their business case in front of the academic board of the program. The 16 professionals who followed the Data Expert Program were divided into 8 groups, who each had to present their case. The business cases covered a broad range of topics: from gaining a competitive advantage in online marketing to improving office space. These presentations really showed how data science can be used to build a successful business case. This was also acknowledged by the academic board, who awarded all the participants with a diploma – after putting them to a final test with critical questions, of course. > Read more (and view more pictures!) Professor Arjen van Witteloostuijn and Professor Daniel Lakens debating on 'Replication, falsification and better ways of doing science' A long, long time ago when computer science was taking its first tentative steps, while scientists recognized the potential of computer science that could only guess in which way things could or would be heading. Now, we find ourselves in a similar position with data science. With researchers working on different themes ranging from reinventing social science using big data to building an autonomous society, data and new technologies will potentially bring major leaps of insight. But, what is the future of data science, what will its impact on society at large be and how can JADS help define the path in which we are heading?
Data Science – Helping change science for the better. But how? In the first of four informal discussion sessions*, Professor Daniel Lakens from TU Eindhoven and Professor Arjen van Witteloostuijn from Tilburg University debated on ‘Replication, falsification and better ways of doing science’. Tackling the replication crisis The replication of experiments is an essential part of scientific research in which significant theories are based on reproducible results. But are they reproducible? Already a long-standing problem, the replication crisis came to a head several years ago in the field of psychology. Professor Lakens believes we should ‘look at a different field - such as psychology - and see how we tried to fix things, as a valuable learning for future studies.’ > Read more October 17th, 2017
Why we should be both techie and fuzzy: keynote speaker Scott Hartley at JADS Speaking to an enthusiastic audience of entrepreneurs and businessmen, venture capitalist and author of The Fuzzy and the Techie Scott Hartley argued the case that the tech industry should no longer be driven purely by software engineers. He believes that students of the liberal arts have a critical role to play in guiding our increasingly digital world in more ethical and humane directions.
The terms ‘fuzzy’ and ‘techie’ were coined at Stanford University and are used to describe, respectively, students of the humanities and social sciences, and students of the engineering or hard sciences. Tech billionaires such as Bill Gates, believe liberal arts programs should be cut in favour of STEM subjects. So maybe we should all just learn to code? ‘No!’ contends Hartley, ‘If Silicon Valley is to fulfil the next stage of its disruptive vision creativity and critical thinking, logical argumentation, and complex problem solving skills will make for better technology. Insights into our public institutions and what makes us human will guide technology to build a better world.’ > Read more October 16th, 2017
Tech start-ups: Scott Hartley on 3 essentials for success Scott Hartley venture capitalist and author of The Fuzzy and the Techie recently met up with seven start-ups at JADS in ‘s-Hertogenbosch to discuss where science meets the humanities and how finding the right balance between these two can give start-ups the leading edge in finding investors.
Kicking off the morning, Hartley is clear about his vision about what makes start-ups (and companies) successful: it’s the ability to find the right balance between technical savvy and relevant solutions combined with a real understanding of the problem that needs to be resolved. ‘Impressed as we are by big data, new technologies and clever models, the tendency has been to judge companies mainly (or merely) on their technical capabilities. Doing so, we forget the other half of technology: the human factor,’ according to Hartley. > Read more October 13th, 2017

NVAO confirms expected accreditation
The Accreditation Organisation of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO) has recognised the Masters Data Science & Entrepreneurship. This is a confirmation of the expectations expressed last year by the NVAO. The visiting committee was especially enthusiastic about the way in which entrepreneurial competencies have been embedded in the program.
The NVAO report states that: ‘the development of the student as an entrepreneur and the learning-by-experience are well-sustained by the network of the program. The unique JADS ecosystem, in which the program is embedded, relates it to many partners and data science businesses. At this moment the campus in Den Bosch is in full operation, with start-ups and research in close proximity of the program.’
The NVAO concludes its findings with:
‘A new program always needs further development, but the panel is convinced that this program will develop into a best-practice for teaching entrepreneurial competencies.’
It goes without saying that we are very proud of these results. The Mariënburg Management Team wishes to thank everybody who has been involved in this process.
