Construction update 10/08/2017
In the last weeks before our summer recess, we announced that we would move in August and by September 1, part of the new building would be in use. Unfortunately, we have had some bad news…
The builder did not manage to complete this new part according to our arrangements. Therefore, in consultation with our construction specialists, we have decided that we will stay in Manresa for the time being. We are very unhappy about this situation, especially because of the new students and colleagues we are expecting. It will get a lot more crowded in Manresa.
Fortunately, we can set up an extra classroom in the building section Walpoort. In addition, 80% of the attic in which companies will be housed will also be made available to us so that we have more study places for our students and concentration workspaces for our employees.
The existing classrooms 1.11 and 1.13 are rearranged to accommodate more students and the large lecture hall 1.12 is also equipped with tables and chairs. The stage will disappear there.
Also in the offices, additional desks will be added where possible.
With these emergency measures taken, we are confident to come through the first semester of the academic year. That requires flexibility and an adapted mentality of all of us. So, thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation in this; we are confident that we will also pass this test!
With kind regards,
Director of Operations

Data scientists presenting wildlife hackathon results
Team RhiKnows won the Rhino data challenge at today's wildlife hackathon. Main reason for selecting these winners was the approach based on two dimensions (window of time and location history) in their data analysis. Ready to prepare for their South Africa trip!
And congrats to the winning team of the second challenge of today's wildlife hackathon! They worked on smart analysis, provided useful insights to the sensor developer, and last but not least: they re-donated their price to charity! Kudos to all team members and other participants!

Data Scientists saving rhinos!
On Friday 7th July 2017 JADS will host the first-ever Wildlife Hackathon. During a full day of data- and brain-crunching activity, no less than 50 bright minds will dedicate themselves to find ways in which data can save some of the most threatened animals in Africa. This unique event is the result of a close collaboration between JADS and the Welgevonden Game Reserve in South Africa.
New colleagues @ JADS
JADS is growing! This section presents personal introductions of new colleagues @ JADS.
I’ve joined JADS 1st of June as scientific advisor. I advise the other Arjan on new academic developments in data science. With an extensive network in both academia and applied data science I focus on connecting our scientists with innovative institutes around the world. To make it more concrete: this month we already had first conversations with the Center of Advanced Hindsight, run by professor Dan Ariely, to work on behavioral change through data science.
I look forward to help grow JADS to the European counterpart of Stanford ;)
The picture is of me in 2014 when I worked on innovation at the core data science team of Booking.com.
