Lecture by Guido de Croon celebrates launch of Cognitive Science & AI program

Picture
On august 26th, 2019, JADS hosted a lecture by Guido de Croon (TU Delft) on insect-inspired AI for drones. In the talk, Guido presented the research he performed at TU Delft to achieve fully autonomous flight of tiny, light-weight drones.

The lecture was the first of two lectures to celebrate the launch of the Cognitive Science & AI program in Tilburg. Arjan van den Born, Academic Director of JADS: "This lecture was hosted by JADS to emphasise the close collaboration between the CS&AI department and JADS."

The second lecture, by Laurens van der Maaten, director of Facebook Research in New York, will be held in the Aula of Tilburg University on September 9 at 19.00 hours.

On July 22-25, 26 boys and girls aged 9-14 years old, led by a team of volunteers from JADS, explored the world of data science during the Data Science Summer School.

The first day was all about introductions. The program included an introduction round and presentations about the how, what and why of data science. The data scientists of the future were given a real data science lecture. They became acquainted with some of basic terms. What is an average? How do you make a graph or a bar chart? How do you process data in Excel? In the afternoon, Monja Knol from Efteling explained to us how Efteling uses data science to make the visitors experience even better.

Collecting data at the Efteling

The Efteling was the setting for day 2. From our headquarters in the Carousel palace we explored the Efteling. Not (only) to ride all the roller coasters, but to collect data. Is the Vogel Rok really more thrilling in the dark? Is the virtual Droomvlucht just as fun as the real one, or perhaps even more better? And how well can you estimate distances if you are on top of the Pagode?

Learning how to present

We spent day 3 at HC 's-Hertogenbosch. The tropical heat outside meant that we had to move the activities inside. So we spent most of our time behind the laptops. The data gathered in the Efteling was processed and the presentations began to take shape. After all, at the end of the Summer School we had to present our findings to the parents. A group of students from the King's Theater Academy came in to give the participants tips and tricks on how to make the presentations even beter.

Applause and a well-earned certificate

On the last day, the finishing touches were put to the presentations. Because it was finally time for the parents to watch and listen to what we had done all week. Fortunatly, nobody notices the shaking knees and sweaty hands during the presentations! The participants received applause and a well-earned certificate.

Thank you for your participation and see you at the Data Science Summer School 2020!

Graduation of second batch of students Master Data Science & Entrepreneurship

Picture

On Friday 12 July 2019, JADS celebrated the second batch of graduates from the Master’s program Data Science and Entrepreneurship.

A total of 14 students obtained their Master’s degrees. In his speech during the graduation ceremony, Arjan van der Born, Academic Director, emphasized one of the ambitions of JADS; building a bridge between academia and society. This is exactly what the students achieved; their thesis subjects showcased the diversity of data science and the relevance of data science to business and society.

One student, for example, developed a solution that helps detect limpness in horses. Another graduate worked together with KLM to use data to minimize the problem of lost baggage. A third student used deep learning to help detect plastic waste in a river in Jakarta, Indonesia.

We wish the students a great future and all the best in their careers!

Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) and Heijmans Utiliteit are joining forces around data science

Picture
Photo: Ton Fleuren, Director Business Development & StartUps Heijmans, and Arjen van den Born, Academic Director JADS, are signing the agreement.

Construction company Heijmans and Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) are going to collaborate more intensively. To do this, the two have signed a cooperation agreement.

The field of data science, in which knowledge and expertise are used to gain insights from data, is developing at lightning speed. Heijmans is increasingly using data to create healthy living environments. Making buildings smarter is a key element in this endeavor. The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is the hotspot in the Netherlands in the field of data science, where students, researchers and businesses work together to create value using data.

Connecting domain knowledge and data science expertise
One of the most important elements of data science is linking domain knowledge (such as a baker who knows exactly how to bake bread) with data science expertise. This is exactly what the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) and Heijmans are aiming for with the collaboration. Heijmans will gather knowledge and insights that lead to better investments and innovations. For JADS, the collaboration will provide access to data sets, new scientific challenges and career opportunities for students.

“When I started working in a construction business, we used stone and concrete. But recently a new raw material has been added: data. Data allows us to help our customers in new ways, which is very important to us. That's why we love working with JADS. ", says Ton Fleuren, Director Business Development & StartUps at Heijmans.

From cases to knowledge sharing
Heijmans and JADS have known each other for some time. What started with a number of cases that were studied by JADS students has grown into a full-fledged collaboration. For example, one of the Professional Doctorate of Engineering (PDEng) students graduated from Heijmans and subsequently started as a data scientist at Heijmans. Another Heijmans data scientist works at JADS one day a week, where she participates in research in the field of energy transition. All examples of a collaboration that contributes to common goals.

Living Lab: Making buildings better and more efficient with data
Cooperation does not only take place on the personnel level. For example, a Living Lab has been set up where sensors from the BeSense Smart Building platform of Heijmans were placed in the JADS campus building. The sensors measure, among other things, presence and comfort level. Academics and students then work with this data in research and the curriculum to find out what comfort level tells us about the experience of people in a space. The data can also be used by the facility services company to implement improvements or to use the building more efficiently.

JADS and Heijmans: ambitions that connect seamlessly
The ambitions of JADS and Heijmans fit well together. JADS has the ambiltion to create an ecosystem in which companies and academics work together to valorize data in various areas such as Smart Agriculture and Smart Cities. Heijmans has the ambition to create healthy living environments. Digitization and making building smarter are increasingly important in this ambition.

Collaboration JADS and Jeroen Bosch Hospital on Artificial Intelligence to further improve healthcare

Picture
Artificial intelligence (AI) makes fast and accurate diagnoses possible and allows care to be tailored to an individual. It can therefore be an answer to social problems such as long waiting lists, shortages on the labor market and rising healthcare costs. The Jeroen Bosch Hospital (JBZ) is strongly committed to AI, including deep learning, as an essential part of future care. The hospital has entered into a partnership with the Diagnostic Image Analysis Group (DIAG) of the Radboudumc and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS). The JHA is the first non-academic hospital in the Netherlands that uses AI in practice and develops itself.

The three organizations have developed a program in the field of AI in Radiology, consisting of four lines that were started simultaneously. They vary from the implementation of validated AI software in clinical practice to the development of a new software program.

“In this collaboration, we consciously opted for knowledge institutions. Precisely because we do not have the AI knowledge needed but are looking for ways to develop it. We want to understand something that is so crucial to our future care ourselves and to be able to estimate it, and not just depend on commercial parties, "says Inge Veltman, JHA innovation manager. “AI will eventually become a permanent part of the practice of our healthcare professionals. Medical Specialists will work more closely in this area in the future with clinical physicists, clinical computer scientists and data scientists. ”

Bram van Ginneken, professor of medical image analysis at Radboudumc and participating in the project, is enthusiastic about the collaboration: “Deep learning is causing a revolution in our field. It is now finally possible to create computer programs that can evaluate scans with an accuracy comparable to human experts. We now need to collaborate with multiple hospitals to jointly create new solutions and test and implement existing solutions in clinical practice. With JBZ we have been able to start collaboration in several areas in a very short time. "

Implementation of existing software program (line 1)
When implementing a validated software program, boneXpert was chosen, a program that allows you to monitor the growth of children on the basis of skeletal age. The computer is faster and more accurate than radiologists. Matthieu Rutten, radiologist at the Jeroen Bosch Hospital: “It is important to estimate the age properly because it is used to determine whether or not hormone therapy can be applied. Between radiologists there can be a variation in estimation of 1 to 2 years. ”The implementation of this program was quite effortless for both pediatricians and radiologists. Both specialisms now work with it.

Distinction between benign and malicious (line 2)
Line two is the deployment of a software program developed at Radboudumc for the detection of densities in the lungs. The aim is to validate the software in the JHA, further improve it and implement it in the clinic. The software is now programmed in such a way that it also assesses whether the densification is good or malicious. This estimate can be used to make a decision to take a biopsy. This can prevent unnecessary stress for the patient. In a first test, the deep learning system already outperformed radiologists.

Recognize miniscule wrist fractures (line 3)
For the third step, the development of completely new software, the most common and hard to detect fracture of the wrist joint was chosen, namely that of the scaphoid (the carpal bone on the thumb side of the wrist). Missing this fracture can have a major clinical impact for patients. The development of the software starts with training the computer by entering thousands of photos so that the computer will recognize the scaphoid and the fracture. For this line, a full-time PhD student is working at JBZ, supervised by Matthieu Rutten (JBZ) and professors Bram van Ginneken from DIAG and Eric Postma from JADS.

Research into clinical implementation AI (line 4)
In the fourth line, the three organizations jointly examine what the answer is to the issues that you encounter when you implement AI in the daily practice of the hospital. Issues that comprehend, among other things, the technical infrastructure, the organization of your organization, the costs and the legal implications. This is picked up by, among others, master students, a PhD student and a clinical computer scientist in training.

Digital transition
The AI process is part of the digital transition that the hospital has initiated. The idea is to make it an integral part of daily hospital practice in the coming years. In addition, JADS focuses on retraining and continuing education of healthcare professionals through post-initial training such as Data Science in Health. In this way, knowledge about AI and data science is not only developed but also introduced into the healthcare sector through other means to widely support the digital transition of healthcare.

Unilever Foods R&D and JADS sign a collaboration of intend to work together in the field of food and data science

Picture
Unilever Foods R&D and the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) signed a declaration of intent today to work together in the field of food and data science. JADS and Unilever are committed to developing technology and services to make the world a better place. Through our partnership on multiple levels in research and education we will make this a reality.

Unilever is constantly looking for new ways to speed up its innovation process and to serve consumers in a sustainable way. Digital transformation and insights from data play an increasingly important role in this. The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is involved in education and research in the field of data science and agri-food on a daily basis. The strategic agendas of Unilever and JADS therefore complement each other nicely and both parties are convinced that by working together a number of areas can contribute to a better future.

The collaboration gives Unilever Foods R&D access to all knowledge and talent within JADS in the field of data science. The collaboration with Unilever is interesting for JADS because it entails unique international domain knowledge, yields interesting datasets, creates opportunities for students and poses challenges for scientists.

From its mission, JADS strives for data-driven solutions for social and economic issues. Unilever is an important player in developing and rolling out solutions to a large number of important social challenges. In areas such as sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of food production systems, JADS scientists and students are happy to take on the challenge together with Unilever.

The collaboration has already been effective informally for some time. Soon after the foundation of JADS Den Bosch, a project was started from the PDEng (Professional Doctorate in Engineering) Data Science program and the Foods R&D team of Unilever in Vlaardingen. The small-scale, informal start has created a solid foundation for successful long-term cooperation, which is now being scaled up and intensified.

The first project that falls under the formal collaboration investigates the relationship between products and their experiences by consumers. This takes place through smart data combinations from different sources: data from the lab and feedback data from consumers.

By intensifying the cooperation, both parties will start to valorise data in more areas and combine data from more sources. Examples of other data sources are production data from factories, logistical movements, and purchase and sales flows.

Multidisciplinarity is key in Data Science

Marc Salomon (Dean of the Amsterdam Business School) comprised a list of all Data Science research and degree programs in the Netherlands, based on this he concludes that alot of Data Science programs seems to be stuck in one academic discipline (mostly within Math and Computer Sciences departments) and miss a joint approach of techniques and application. Multidisciplinarity is sorely lacking. This multidisciplinarity is what is required by industry to maximize the potential of Data Science and AI.

The only exception to this is the Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) where science and business meet according to the write-up of Het Financieel Dagblad. JADS was founded with this multidisciplinarity in mind and even though we have come to regard it as normal it is still unique in the Netherlands.

Book 'Huys van Boxtel en zijn buren' shows history of Mariënburg

JADS is a modern-day ecosystem of people, government, businesses and knowledge but this past Sunday we also learned our home, the Mariënburg convent, is part of an intricate ecosystem of people and ventures dating back over 700 years.
With the book presentation of ‘Huys van Boxtel en zijn buren’ we got an insight in the tales of the inhabitants of the Uilenburg neighborhood. New data sciences techniques were used in piecing together all the available information into one large story.
During the presentation mayor Jack Mikkers got to present Ton Wetzer (Curator of the Bossche Encyclopedie) with a Knighthood in the Order of Orange-Nassau for his tireless efforts in digitally preserving the history of 's-Hertogenbosch.
We are proud to have participated in this great research and look forward to other projects to utilize data in historical contexts.

The jury of the 2018 Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award on the relevance of responsible data use

The deadline of the 2018 Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award is coming closer. Time to meet our jury and their perspective on the importance of organziations taking their responsibility when making use of data in a fair, accurate, confidential and transparent way.
Picture
Jessica van den Bosch, Quartermaster Entrepreneurship College Tilburg University
"Our world is increasingly concerned with data, and although we as a human being and organizations more generally can benefit from this, it also leads to undesirable effects. People share data (too) easily and/or they are not always aware of what can be done with those data. Sometimes you have to protect people against themselves so good data governance is important! With the Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award we want to show the good examples of how it can be done: using data to create value as an entrepreneur without violating the privacy of your clients!"
Picture
Werner Liebregts, Assistant Professor JADS
"Nowadays, use of data seems to be equivalent to abuse of data. Data often leak, intentionally or unintentionally, and are regularly used for manipulation. At least, that’s how it seems when following the news. At the same time, we know that many ambitious entrepreneurs are exploiting the unprecedented opportunities of data without harming the interests of the original owners or the society at large. Unfortunately, new value creation through responsible use of data remains underexposed. It’s therefore about time to offer a podium for these types of data-driven business activities."
Picture
Marc Steen, Senior Research Scientist TNO
"It’s commonly understood by now that infotech (big data, algorithms, AI, IoT, social networking, etc.) is radically changing societies and people’s daily lives. I’m fascinated by an increasingly influential group of people who criticize our current usages of technology and propose more humane approaches. Jaron Lanier, pioneer of VR, advocates quitting social media—or, better still: the creation of social media that foster conversation and civility. Cathy O’Neil drew attention to algorithms that are used as ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’ and currently helps companies to audit their algorithms for fairness and transparency. Tristan Harris left Google to  found the ‘Center for Humane Technology’, which champions a human-centred approach to technology—including practical advise for using mobile phones more wisely. Sherry Turkle, based on 30 years of intimately studying people using the Internet and mobile phones, advocates restoring civility and conversation. These are all examples of people who want to use technology to create a just society in which people can flourish. How great would it be would be to see Dutch companies do the same? How great would it be, if we have a host of Dutch companies engaging in responsible innovation, to serve people and planet in profitable ways?"

Sweco and JADS will join forces in the development of Smart Cities

Today Sweco and JADS signed an LOI (Letter-of-Intent) aimed at joining forces during the next three years. Together we will explore the possibilities which data technology offers in the development and design of our future cities and urban areas.

Arjan van den Born (Academic Director, JADS): "We are constantly questioning ourselves on how we can understand and advance the value of data, and translate it into concrete applications for companies and society. One of our focus areas is Smart Cities in which we look at the future of our cities and living environments in relation to data and digital technologies. The collaboration with Sweco is a perfect example of how we work closely together with leading companies in defined areas – in this case Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy company – in a joint focus regarding the shaping of our future society."

William Harding (board member, Sweco Netherlands): "To solve the problems in the city, we need to integrate knowledge more and more intelligently. To a certain extent we have the knowledge regarding the field of digitalization within our own organization. For example, in the area of geographical information systems for municipalities we are market leaders and our colleagues in Sweden excel at data processing. We would like to share this knowledge and develop it together with other parties. JADS is a wonderful platform where knowledge is brought together in the field of Data Science, entrepreneurship and research. This is why I am delighted with this collaboration."

A first step in the collaboration is the successful development of a Social Data Layer PoC that was developed in collaboration with start-ups located at the JADS Mariënburg Campus: Dataspox, Green Gorillas and Soda. The tool measures the sentiment on social media on issues in urban areas and the first proof resulted in interesting insights. During the next six months the tool will be improved.

Today Stichting Godshuizen and JADS kicked-off a new collaboration!

Cello and Reinier van Arkel (part of Stichting Godshuizen) will work together with the JADS Computational Personalization Lab on exploring how data generated by wearables can help to improve health care. An important part of the project is responsible use of data by ensuring that clients have the complete ownership of their data.

The collaboration is part of the existing Health Telescope which is aimed at investigating the effect of personalized eHealth and develop novel data science methods. The Health Telescope is set up together with partners in health care, and consists of a panel with inhabitants from the Noord-Brabant region who are given wearables, periodically answer questions and receive recommendations for apps.

JADS is proud partner of Boulevard 2018

This week the city of ´s-Hertogenbosch is the stage of the theatre festival Boulevard 2018.

The motto of the festival is ‘What you see is what you guess’. Many of the shows, concerts, performances and installations in the festival deal with identity. Some place gender, religion, or nationality in an unexpected light. Others reveal the impact of the internet.

Plenty to choose from. Boulevard 2018 is multifaceted, with over a hundred items on the bill from almost every discipline. A fitting description: a festival that celebrates Southern-ness, soulfulness and expressiveness. With a hunger for the unknown and an open attitude.

What you see is what you guess is an invitation to look beyond your initial observations. On the stages and beyond. For eleven days and beyond.

JADS is proud to be partner of this event which fills our beautiful city with 100+ performances, concerts, shows and more.

JADS and A.T. Kearney to partner in Digital Transformations
Global strategy consulting firm A.T. Kearney has joined forces with JADS, a collaboration between Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology, to further build capabilities and expertise in the field of data science. A.T. Kearney has one of the largest analytics teams at a full-service consulting firm comprising of analytics practitioners, data scientists, and data engineers. Data science is at the core of A.T. Kearney’s Digital Transformation practice and with this partnership A.T. Kearney locally fortifies its partnering ecosystem.

Transformation in a digital world
Digital technology is rapidly advancing and becoming increasingly important in daily life and in the corporate world. Corporates struggle with their digital transformation and are urged to change quickly by for example changing customer preferences and new entrants in their markets. To successfully make the required transformation, a full suite of capabilities, expertise and tooling is needed. Very few companies (possible none) have sufficient access to these necessities in-house. “We help our clients with their digital transformation and for this we have created an ecosystem with partners that allows us to best support our clients. The new partnership with JADS is an excellent and powerful example of this”, according to Stef Oud, partner at A.T. Kearney and responsible for its Digital Transformation practice.

Application for the Data Challenge Week 2018 (spring edition) is closed!
In a few weeks, from 13-20 April, it is time for a new edition of the Data Challenge Week (DCW) of the JADS PDEng program Data Science. During this week, applicants of the program and trainees will form teams who will work together on a provided dataset. Special fact is that the participants are lodged in a bungalow park where they work, eat, relax and socialize during these 7 days. An intensive week in which the applicants go through an intensive assessment on technical & soft skills, personality and motivation. Outcome of the week will be a new group of trainees and hopefully some new promising insights on the dataset.

The host of this edition’s dataset is ENEXIS B.V., a regional network operator with national coverage in the energy industry. ENEXIS B.V. has provided six datasets which will be analyzed and presented during the Data Challenge Week. The participants of the DCW, the group who will work on the data, consists of 16 trainees and 21 applicants. A group with an international character as there are participants from over 13 different countries including China, Ethiopia, India, Ukraine.

It promises to be another inspiring edition with hard work, some fun, new trainees and revealing insights.

Invitation to Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics
Current forecasts tell us that in the future we will all be ‘urban’. This rapid urbanization of our planet calls for smart and evidence-based responses, from both the policy side and the research community.

M-i-City Centre
The M-i-City Centre at JADS aims to introduce a novel perspective on the complexity of cities (and urban areas) by developing new data-based envisioning methods for ‘cities4people’. This will be done by using (i) systematic decomposition tools for the urban space (the ‘microcosmic city’) and (ii) (big) data on small-scale units in the city as knowledge-based building blocks for the real essence of the modern city. Much emphasis will be put on the statistical organization of micro information in the digital arena of contemporaneous cities as a tool for sustainable urban governance.

Kick-off meeting
The international  kick-off meeting of this new initiative, titled: Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics, will take place on 20 April 2018. The venue of the meeting will be the newly renovated Chapel at the JADS Mariënburg Campus. The preliminary program can be found via the link below.

Join the international experts, governmental officials and peers for this kick-off (registration is free)!

ADchieve new partner within JADS ecosystem
Picturefrom left: Jan van Dijk (leaddeveloper), Coen de Vries (partner ADchieve) , Mark van Werven (CEO)
As of February 2018, ADchieve will be part of the JADS ecosystem. ADchieve is a company that focuses on developing automation solutions for advertising in search engines such as Google. On a daily basis, advertisements in Google for millions of products are created using ADchieve software. To achieve this feat, ADchieve works closely with Google and can even call itself Google’s largest API partner in the world. Clients of ADchieve include various large online retailers in the Netherlands and abroad.

A major advantage of advertising on Google and via other online channels is the high level of measurability of the results. You can get a detailed insight into which investments in Google lead to purchases by consumers. The enormous amount of data generated by advertising campaigns is a source for analysis and subsequent campaign optimization.

JADS CLLQM: Professor Donald Green on interference and bias
‘The pace at which data science is moving forward is breathtaking. As a leading knowledge institute in this field, we at JADS consider it our task to take on an active role in the debate of the impact of data science on society as we know it. As researchers, we should not only focus on ‘hard core’ data science, but broaden our scope: to optimizing the application of big data for improving and solving business and societal models, processes and challenges,’ Arjan Haring, Scientific Advisor at JADS, explains about what he considers one of the roles of the data science academy to be.

‘To me, the data economy should fuel more evidence-based practices, not simply algorithms. When data is used in a way it tries to unravel causal relations, it adds to how fast we or an organization can learn. But it also requires us to accept that it’s not only successes that lead the way. We have to adapt our mindset. To: where the more we know, the less we know. Where we don’t succeed (or increase revenue streams) every time we do something, where we fail most of the time. By accepting this harsh reality of innovation, we will learn and be able to take the innovative lead. JADS is increasingly focusing on combining experimentation with data science. In this way, we enable more effective testing and robust data analysis. In our opinion the best of both worlds. And it’s why we are pleased to have Professor Green as guest speaker in our third JADS CLLQM session.’

Celebrating data entrepreneurship: graduation of the first Data Expert Program students
You might have seen the happy faces when you are following us on social media. On December 15th, we celebrated the graduation of the first Data Expert Program students. A festive event during which the students proved to be real data pioneers, capable of combining data science and entrepreneurship.

Before the students could call themselves Data Expert Program graduates, they had to pitch their business case in front of the academic board of the program. The 16 professionals who followed the Data Expert Program were divided into 8 groups, who each had to present their case. The business cases covered a broad range of topics: from gaining a competitive advantage in online marketing to improving office space. These presentations really showed how data science can be used to build a successful business case. This was also acknowledged by the academic board, who awarded all the participants with a diploma – after putting them to a final test with critical questions, of course.
