Discover EngD: insights from trainees and alumni

On Tuesday 14 April, JADS hosted a new edition of the Discover EngD session, bringing together around 15 participants on campus and 30 online. The hybrid setup allowed for an open, accessible conversation about the EngD in Data Science.
After a short introduction to the program, the focus quickly shifted to the people experiencing it day to day. Current trainees Swasti Desai, Coen Schouten and Niko Tsimpliaridis, were joined by EngD alumnus Ankit Majhi to answer questions submitted in advance and during the session.
The discussion moved between practical and personal topics. Participants asked about the balance between coursework and industry projects, what kind of organizations trainees work with, and how to prepare for the application process. There were also more individual questions, for example about applying before graduation is fully completed, visa arrangements for international candidates, and which technical skills are most useful to build beforehand.
Throughout the hour, the chat remained active. Moderators collected questions, making sure specific questions were addressed without slowing down the conversation.
For those who joined us in ’s-Hertogenbosch, the afternoon continued with a tour of the Mariënburg campus. Walking through the former monastery, now home to JADS, gave a more tangible sense of the environment trainees work in. The session closed informally with drinks and time to continue conversations.
