JADS contributes to new ELSA lab on responsible AI for the energy transition

The new AI4ES (AI for Energy and Sustainability) research project has been awarded €3.7 million through the Dutch National Growth Fund’s AiNed ELSA Labs program, administered by NWO. The project represents an important step toward developing responsible, human‑centred AI that supports a sustainable and reliable energy system.
About AI4ES
Led by the University of Twente, AI4ES investigates how AI can be deployed responsibly in the energy domain, ensuring alignment with ethical, legal and societal considerations. The project will:
- Investigate the interaction between AI innovation, energy law, and sustainability regulations.
- Co-design frameworks and tools for responsible AI integration in energy systems and policy.
- Engage stakeholders across public, private, and civil sectors to ensure ethical and socially legitimate AI applications.
- Deliver actionable insights for policy guidance, best practices, and scalable models for responsible AI in the energy domain.
Through a quadruple‑helix collaboration—science, industry, government and society—the project creates a research environment aimed at addressing real‑world challenges in sustainable energy.
JADS’s contribution
JADS plays a key role in the project through its expertise in digital twins for sustainability. Building on ongoing work in data-driven digital twin modelling, JADS researchers—among them Jos van Hillegersberg and Alexander Vossen—will contribute to developing advanced simulation environments that support responsible AI adoption in the energy sector.
Consortium
AI4ES is coordinated by Thomas Hoppe (UT), with technical leadership by Michel Bourban and Peter Stegmaier (UT). The consortium includes researchers from UT and JADS, alongside partners such as KPN, Enexis, Eurofiber, Lucend (formerly known as CoolGradient), Oost NL / AI-hub Oost-Nederland, and several public and private organisations.
Of the total €3.7 million project budget, €1.7 million is funded by NWO and €2 million by co‑funders.
