Are you already working in a data-related job and do you want to become a professional data scientist? Do you want to improve your technical and professional skills?
Are you passionate about data science and artificial intelligence, and about problem solving? Do you have the business acumen to spot data science opportunities and transform them into actionable results?
Then have a look at the EngD Data Science program!
The two-year interdisciplinary EngD program Data Science combines statistics, computer science, mathematics, and design theory with the business acumen to explore data sets, gather actionable insights, visualize results, and communicate meaningful findings taking into consideration underlying legal and ethical contemplations. Graduates make sense of data and have the ability to articulate their discoveries and recommendations to those not schooled in the world of data in the frame of industrial and business design and decision processes. Successful completion of our educational program leads to Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree. EngD Data Science program is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology and is located at Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS). JADS is a joint initiative of Eindhoven University of Technology and Tilburg University, located in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
The learning environment of the first year offers a wide range of training opportunities. Trainees are expected to actively steer their development through lectures and workshops offered by our EngD program, electives offered by the Graduate School of TU/e, and through external sources. The mandatory curriculum of the first year is a blend of technical lecture blocks, workshops on professional skills, and training projects in real-life setting. In the elective part (about 30% of the first year) trainees are expected to refine and personalize their development through online courses, electives offered by TU/e, and data challenges. The backbone of first year learning environment are the training projects, which are used by trainees to integrate knowledge and skills elements by solving real-life challenges.
The focus of the second year is the graduation project (up to 12 months), which is conducted for a company or government organization. The project is related to a real-life problem and is constrained by time planning, project planning, and project deliverables. The trainee is coached by experienced design engineers and academic staff during the graduation project. The graduation project closes with the public presentation and defense in a close session with the examination committee. After a successful defense the graduate is entitled to the degree of “Engineering Doctorate”.
From PDEng to EngD per September 2022
Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) degree will change its name to Engineering Doctorate (EngD) starting September 1, 2022. The reason for this name change is that the universities of applied sciences (HBO) in the Netherlands will have their own doctorate programs starting September 2022, which will be named Professional Doctorate (PD). To avoid confusion and to keep the difference in education clear, the four technical universities decided jointly to change the name from PDEng to EngD.
