Short Description

The two-year interdisciplinary EngD program Data Science combines statistics, computer science, mathematics, and design theory with the business acumen to explore data sets, gather actionable insights, visualize results, and communicate meaningful findings taking into consideration underlying legal and ethical contemplations. Graduates make sense of data and have the ability to articulate their discoveries and recommendations to those not schooled in the world of data in the frame of industrial and business design and decision processes. Successful completion of our educational program leads to Engineering Doctorate (EngD) degree. EngD Data Science program is part of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Eindhoven University of Technology and is located at Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS). JADS is a joint initiative of Eindhoven University of Technology and Tilburg University, located in ‘s-Hertogenbosch.

Job Description

The learning environment of the first year offers a wide range of training opportunities. Trainees are expected to actively steer their development through lectures and workshops offered by our EngD program, electives offered by the Graduate School of TU/e, and through external sources. The mandatory curriculum of the first year is a blend of technical lecture blocks, workshops on professional skills, and training projects in real-life setting. In the elective part (about 30% of the first year) trainees are expected to refine and personalize their development through online courses, electives offered by TU/e, and data challenges. The backbone of first year learning environment are the training projects, which are used by trainees to integrate knowledge and skills elements by solving real-life challenges.

The focus of the second year is the graduation project (up to 12 months), which is conducted for a company or government organization. The project is related to a real-life problem and is constrained by time planning, project planning, and project deliverables. The trainee is coached by experienced design engineers and academic staff during the graduation project. The graduation project closes with the public presentation and defense in a close session with the examination committee. After a successful defense the graduate is entitled to the degree of “Engineering Doctorate”.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, or in a relevant application field of Data Science such as Econometrics and Bioinformatics. The MSc-degree is from an accredited institution comparable to the Eindhoven University of Technology or Tilburg University.
  • A design-oriented attitude.
  • Ability to work in a team and interested in collaborating with the industrial partners.
  • Fluent in spoken and written English.

Conditions of employment

  • A full-time employment for two years.
  • To support you during your EngD and to prepare you for the rest of your career, you will have free access to a personal development program for EngD trainees.
  • The salary is in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement of the Dutch Universities, salary scale TOIO € 2009,- gross per month based on a fulltime employment.
  • Additionally, an annual holiday allowance of 8% of the yearly salary, plus a year-end allowance of 8.3% of the annual salary.
