The jury of the 2018 Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award on the relevance of responsible data use
The deadline of the 2018 Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award is coming closer. Time to meet our jury and their perspective on the importance of organziations taking their responsibility when making use of data in a fair, accurate, confidential and transparent way.
Jessica van den Bosch, Quartermaster Entrepreneurship College Tilburg University
"Our world is increasingly concerned with data, and although we as a human being and organizations more generally can benefit from this, it also leads to undesirable effects. People share data (too) easily and/or they are not always aware of what can be done with those data. Sometimes you have to protect people against themselves so good data governance is important! With the Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award we want to show the good examples of how it can be done: using data to create value as an entrepreneur without violating the privacy of your clients!" Werner Liebregts, Assistant Professor JADS
"Nowadays, use of data seems to be equivalent to abuse of data. Data often leak, intentionally or unintentionally, and are regularly used for manipulation. At least, that’s how it seems when following the news. At the same time, we know that many ambitious entrepreneurs are exploiting the unprecedented opportunities of data without harming the interests of the original owners or the society at large. Unfortunately, new value creation through responsible use of data remains underexposed. It’s therefore about time to offer a podium for these types of data-driven business activities." |
Marc Steen, Senior Research Scientist TNO
"It’s commonly understood by now that infotech (big data, algorithms, AI, IoT, social networking, etc.) is radically changing societies and people’s daily lives. I’m fascinated by an increasingly influential group of people who criticize our current usages of technology and propose more humane approaches. Jaron Lanier, pioneer of VR, advocates quitting social media—or, better still: the creation of social media that foster conversation and civility. Cathy O’Neil drew attention to algorithms that are used as ‘Weapons of Math Destruction’ and currently helps companies to audit their algorithms for fairness and transparency. Tristan Harris left Google to found the ‘Center for Humane Technology’, which champions a human-centred approach to technology—including practical advise for using mobile phones more wisely. Sherry Turkle, based on 30 years of intimately studying people using the Internet and mobile phones, advocates restoring civility and conversation. These are all examples of people who want to use technology to create a just society in which people can flourish. How great would it be would be to see Dutch companies do the same? How great would it be, if we have a host of Dutch companies engaging in responsible innovation, to serve people and planet in profitable ways?" The ceremony of the 2018 Responsible Data Entrepreneurship Award will take place on Tuesday 30 October as part of the Den Bosch Data Week (29 Oktober – 3 November).

Sweco and JADS will join forces in the development of Smart Cities
Today Sweco and JADS signed an LOI (Letter-of-Intent) aimed at joining forces during the next three years. Together we will explore the possibilities which data technology offers in the development and design of our future cities and urban areas.
Arjan van den Born (Academic Director, JADS): "We are constantly questioning ourselves on how we can understand and advance the value of data, and translate it into concrete applications for companies and society. One of our focus areas is Smart Cities in which we look at the future of our cities and living environments in relation to data and digital technologies. The collaboration with Sweco is a perfect example of how we work closely together with leading companies in defined areas – in this case Europe’s leading architecture and engineering consultancy company – in a joint focus regarding the shaping of our future society."
William Harding (board member, Sweco Netherlands): "To solve the problems in the city, we need to integrate knowledge more and more intelligently. To a certain extent we have the knowledge regarding the field of digitalization within our own organization. For example, in the area of geographical information systems for municipalities we are market leaders and our colleagues in Sweden excel at data processing. We would like to share this knowledge and develop it together with other parties. JADS is a wonderful platform where knowledge is brought together in the field of Data Science, entrepreneurship and research. This is why I am delighted with this collaboration."
A first step in the collaboration is the successful development of a Social Data Layer PoC that was developed in collaboration with start-ups located at the JADS Mariënburg Campus: Dataspox, Green Gorillas and Soda. The tool measures the sentiment on social media on issues in urban areas and the first proof resulted in interesting insights. During the next six months the tool will be improved.

Only one week left until the sixth Data Challenge Week of the PDEng program Data Science
On September 21st, the sixth edition of the Data Challenge Week (DCW) of the JADS PDEng program Data Science will start. Out of many applications from all over the world, 24 applicants of the PDEng program are invited to be assessed during this week. They will form mixed teams together with 22 trainees of the PDEng program and will work on provided datasets. By working on these datasets, the participants of the DCW are challenged to show their technical knowledge, skills on teamwork, and other non-technical skills.
During this intensive week, the participants are lodged in bungalows, where they work, eat, sleep, and socialize. Whereas this week is an assessment for the applicants, it offers a unique learning experience for the PDEng Data Science trainees.

Today Stichting Godshuizen and JADS kicked-off a new collaboration!
Cello and Reinier van Arkel (part of Stichting Godshuizen) will work together with the JADS Computational Personalization Lab on exploring how data generated by wearables can help to improve health care. An important part of the project is responsible use of data by ensuring that clients have the complete ownership of their data.
The collaboration is part of the existing Health Telescope which is aimed at investigating the effect of personalized eHealth and develop novel data science methods. The Health Telescope is set up together with partners in health care, and consists of a panel with inhabitants from the Noord-Brabant region who are given wearables, periodically answer questions and receive recommendations for apps.

JADS is proud partner of Boulevard 2018
This week the city of ´s-Hertogenbosch is the stage of the theatre festival Boulevard 2018.
The motto of the festival is ‘What you see is what you guess’. Many of the shows, concerts, performances and installations in the festival deal with identity. Some place gender, religion, or nationality in an unexpected light. Others reveal the impact of the internet.
Plenty to choose from. Boulevard 2018 is multifaceted, with over a hundred items on the bill from almost every discipline. A fitting description: a festival that celebrates Southern-ness, soulfulness and expressiveness. With a hunger for the unknown and an open attitude.
What you see is what you guess is an invitation to look beyond your initial observations. On the stages and beyond. For eleven days and beyond.
JADS is proud to be partner of this event which fills our beautiful city with 100+ performances, concerts, shows and more.

JADS and A.T. Kearney to partner in Digital Transformations
JADS and A.T. Kearney to partner in Digital Transformations
Global strategy consulting firm A.T. Kearney has joined forces with JADS, a collaboration between Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of Technology, to further build capabilities and expertise in the field of data science. A.T. Kearney has one of the largest analytics teams at a full-service consulting firm comprising of analytics practitioners, data scientists, and data engineers. Data science is at the core of A.T. Kearney’s Digital Transformation practice and with this partnership A.T. Kearney locally fortifies its partnering ecosystem.
Transformation in a digital world
Digital technology is rapidly advancing and becoming increasingly important in daily life and in the corporate world. Corporates struggle with their digital transformation and are urged to change quickly by for example changing customer preferences and new entrants in their markets. To successfully make the required transformation, a full suite of capabilities, expertise and tooling is needed. Very few companies (possible none) have sufficient access to these necessities in-house. “We help our clients with their digital transformation and for this we have created an ecosystem with partners that allows us to best support our clients. The new partnership with JADS is an excellent and powerful example of this”, according to Stef Oud, partner at A.T. Kearney and responsible for its Digital Transformation practice.

Invitation to Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics
Invitation to Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics
Current forecasts tell us that in the future we will all be ‘urban’. This rapid urbanization of our planet calls for smart and evidence-based responses, from both the policy side and the research community.
M-i-City Centre
The M-i-City Centre at JADS aims to introduce a novel perspective on the complexity of cities (and urban areas) by developing new data-based envisioning methods for ‘cities4people’. This will be done by using (i) systematic decomposition tools for the urban space (the ‘microcosmic city’) and (ii) (big) data on small-scale units in the city as knowledge-based building blocks for the real essence of the modern city. Much emphasis will be put on the statistical organization of micro information in the digital arena of contemporaneous cities as a tool for sustainable urban governance.
Kick-off meeting
The international kick-off meeting of this new initiative, titled: Cities4People: Smart Cities and Data Analytics, will take place on 20 April 2018. The venue of the meeting will be the newly renovated Chapel at the JADS Mariënburg Campus. The preliminary program can be found via the link below.
Join the international experts, governmental officials and peers for this kick-off (registration is free)!

ADchieve new partner within JADS ecosystem
ADchieve new partner within JADS ecosystem

As of February 2018, ADchieve will be part of the JADS ecosystem. ADchieve is a company that focuses on developing automation solutions for advertising in search engines such as Google. On a daily basis, advertisements in Google for millions of products are created using ADchieve software. To achieve this feat, ADchieve works closely with Google and can even call itself Google’s largest API partner in the world. Clients of ADchieve include various large online retailers in the Netherlands and abroad.
A major advantage of advertising on Google and via other online channels is the high level of measurability of the results. You can get a detailed insight into which investments in Google lead to purchases by consumers. The enormous amount of data generated by advertising campaigns is a source for analysis and subsequent campaign optimization.

JADS CLLQM: Professor Donald Green on interference and bias
JADS CLLQM: Professor Donald Green on interference and bias
‘The pace at which data science is moving forward is breathtaking. As a leading knowledge institute in this field, we at JADS consider it our task to take on an active role in the debate of the impact of data science on society as we know it. As researchers, we should not only focus on ‘hard core’ data science, but broaden our scope: to optimizing the application of big data for improving and solving business and societal models, processes and challenges,’ Arjan Haring, Scientific Advisor at JADS, explains about what he considers one of the roles of the data science academy to be.
‘To me, the data economy should fuel more evidence-based practices, not simply algorithms. When data is used in a way it tries to unravel causal relations, it adds to how fast we or an organization can learn. But it also requires us to accept that it’s not only successes that lead the way. We have to adapt our mindset. To: where the more we know, the less we know. Where we don’t succeed (or increase revenue streams) every time we do something, where we fail most of the time. By accepting this harsh reality of innovation, we will learn and be able to take the innovative lead. JADS is increasingly focusing on combining experimentation with data science. In this way, we enable more effective testing and robust data analysis. In our opinion the best of both worlds. And it’s why we are pleased to have Professor Green as guest speaker in our third JADS CLLQM session.’

Celebrating data entrepreneurship: graduation of the first Data Expert Program students
Celebrating data entrepreneurship: graduation of the first Data Expert Program students
You might have seen the happy faces when you are following us on social media. On December 15th, we celebrated the graduation of the first Data Expert Program students. A festive event during which the students proved to be real data pioneers, capable of combining data science and entrepreneurship.
Before the students could call themselves Data Expert Program graduates, they had to pitch their business case in front of the academic board of the program. The 16 professionals who followed the Data Expert Program were divided into 8 groups, who each had to present their case. The business cases covered a broad range of topics: from gaining a competitive advantage in online marketing to improving office space. These presentations really showed how data science can be used to build a successful business case. This was also acknowledged by the academic board, who awarded all the participants with a diploma – after putting them to a final test with critical questions, of course.
